4. Safety, Moderation & Content Review
To keep Speakly safe, our trust and safety team may review messages, posts, stories, profile information, and other content you share. We do this in three situations:
- When you or another user reports content — a moderator may read the reported message and a small number of surrounding messages for context.
- When we have reasonable cause to believe an account is engaged in abuse, harassment, sexual content involving minors, spam, fraud, or other policy violations — an authorised member of our team may review that account's conversations.
- Where required by law, court order, or to protect Speakly, our users, or the public.
All such reviews are logged. We retain the log of who accessed what content, and why, for at least 12 months.
Disappearing messages: when you enable disappearing messages, they are automatically deleted from our servers after the time you choose, and are no longer available for moderation review once expired. A copy may remain in a routine encrypted backup (retained up to 30 days, used only for service recovery) unless legal process requires otherwise.
Backups: we take encrypted database backups on a regular schedule, retained up to 30 days and used solely to restore service. We do not browse backups for moderation, but they may be produced in response to valid legal process.
Lawful basis: for users in the EU/UK, our lawful basis for these reviews is our legitimate interest in keeping the service safe (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). For California users, data collected for security purposes — including the moderator access log — is disclosed here under the CCPA/CPRA.
5. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. This includes:
- Encryption of data in transit and at rest
- Secure authentication mechanisms
- Regular security assessments
- Limited access to personal data by employees
6. Your Rights and Choices
You have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete your account and associated data

7. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal purposes.

Speakly is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you become aware that a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
